Weeks 2 & 3

Last two weeks have been very busy because of the deadlines and exams. But now period III is over, and I can focus on ALMS. :-D

I read Murakami's novel 3,5 hours and managed to finish the first novel (Hear the Wind Sing) of the book. I started the second novel Pinball, 1973 which tells story of the same young man like in the first novel but just three years later. I really enjoyed reading Hear the Wind Sing so hopefully the second novel is at least as good as the first one.

Then I also read, translated and made some notes about an article 'Gender Differences in Happiness: the Effects of Marriage, Social Roles, and Social Support in East Asia' (Hori & Kamo 2017). I also made list of words which were unknown for me (the list is below). I founded the article very interesting because last autumn I took few courses of sociology and social physiology. Generally the topics about happiness and gender differences are absorbing to me. Reading and translating etc. took 2,5 hours.

Week 4: Tuesday + Wednesday

On Tuesday I watched a document, The Final Year , from Netflix without subtitles. The document basically shows Barack Obama's last year of being president of the United States. The document is 1 hour 30 minutes long. Today I read an article ' Japanese society: Inside out and outside i n ' (Sugimoto 2014). Interesting part of the article was about Japanese kanji characters and comparing them to Western alphabetics. Kanji charachters are more like "ideographic rather than phonetic; they represent an image of something, and thus nurtured a 'pictocentric' culture" (Sugimoto 2014: 197). Week 4: Thursday - Sunday

On Thursday I watched document " Before the Flood " from Netflix with English subtitles. The document was 1 hour and 36 minutes long. On Friday and Sunday, I spent some time on the train. I used that time watching two lectures from Academic Earth. The first one was " Population and the Environment " (Robert Wyman, Yale University) and the second was " Exploding Worlds and Course Introduction " (Douglas Rae, Yale University). The total lenght of the lectures was 2 hours. 07.-10.03.2019: 3h 36min

Week 5: Monday - Thursday

This week I watched two lectures from Academic Earth. The first one was " The Future of the Planet " (Chris Cullins, Case Western Reserve University) and the topic was mostly about the future of food supply and bio fuels. The title of the second lecture was " Global Demography of Abortion " and it's part of a series " Global Population Growth " kept by professor Robert Wyman at Yale University. I have watched few other lectures from that series and I have to say I like his style of teaching. He makes everything sounds interesting.  When I was watching and listening the lectures I also made some notes at the same time. I noticed I need some more practice on that. It isn't so easy to summarize the notes in English. The total length of the lectures were 2 hours and 10 minutes. On Wednesday me and my ALMS friends went to see Vertigo to Kino Regina. We met at 5 pm and had a dinner at UniCafe. We talked in English about what kind of movies we ...
